According to the number of covering layers, spandex covered yarn can be divided into single-covered and double-covered types. The difference lies in the number of outer covering layers and the wrap density. Single-covered yarn is made by wrapping a layer of outer yarn around the core spandex filament with fewer turns. It has obvious core exposure in the fabric and is not suitable for dark-colored products. It is mainly used in elastic fabrics such as socks and weft-knitted underwear. Double-covered yarn is formed by wrapping two layers of filaments or yarns around the core spandex filament, and these two layers are generally in opposite directions. The core spandex is well covered with less exposure. Moreover, since the outer yarns are symmetrically wrapped around the core filament at opposite helix angles, the elastic balance of the covered yarn is good, and it can be processed in subsequent procedures without setting treatment. However, the processing cost of double-covered yarn is relatively high. It is mainly used in elastic fabrics such as leg warmers, elastic bands, sock cuffs, and pantyhose.
According to the equipment used, covered yarn can be divided into mechanical covered yarn and air covered yarn. Mechanical Covered Yarn (abbreviated as SCY) is produced by continuously rotating and wrapping outer fiber filaments around uniformly drawn core spandex. It has twist (abbreviated as TPM) through twisting, and its main characteristic is that the fabric has a smooth and (crisp) texture. Air Covered Yarn (abbreviated as ACY) is made by drawing outer fiber filaments and spandex filaments simultaneously through a certain type of nozzle, where highly compressed air is regularly jetted to form rhythmic network points in the yarn. Its fabric feels soft and smooth.
